Nelson County Community Clinic (NCCC) just completed its sixteenth year of service to the community. It opened in September 2006 to ensure on-going access to basic healthcare for the working, uninsured, low-income adults living in Nelson County, Kentucky. This specific target population was chosen as a result of a three-year community endeavor focused on identifying Nelson County’s primary health concerns, gaps in access to medical care, and solutions to the prioritized problems.
Financially challenged Nelson County adult residents now have access to basic medical, dental and vision care, and pharmaceutical services. Our free clinic is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization staffed part-time by an Executive Director, Physician, Dentist and a Benefits Coordinator, and a host of volunteering physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and business professionals committed to the well-being of each patient. The clinic is administered by dedicated volunteer Medical, Pharmacy, and Dental Directors and guided by a responsive and caring volunteer Board of Directors. This volunteer Board of Directors meets quarterly to review clinic operations and finances. This Board includes representatives from the areas of government, health care, dental care, finance, business and spiritual guidance.
Due to the overwhelming need for additional space, the clinic relocated from a small, renovated house to a former physician office building during the summer of 2008. The move increased the clinic’s square footage from 1,100 to approximately 1,800 allowing for a more efficient clinic operation and an expansion of services to include three medical exam rooms, the addition of a dental clinic with three dental operatory suites, and Medicare benefits counseling and prescription assistance. The extra space allows for the treatment of more patients, maximizes the use of volunteer hours, and minimizes patient wait times.
